About the Photographer

My path to becoming a commercial photographer started at a very early age. One of my earliest memories is running around the family home in Winnipeg with a Brownie Hawkeye that my mom had put in my toybox. I didn’t know what it did but it made a cool clicking noise when I pushed the button! I eventually got into graphic arts while in high school. I had no formal training but I would screen print photo-stenciled t-shirts for myself and my friends. After graduation, my sister gave me her camera and I’ve been taking pictures ever since.
My foray into commercial photography would have to wait a few years, though. I became a graphic artist in 1993 and worked in that profession until 2001 when I decided to devote all of my efforts to commercial photography. Duality Photographic and Digital Services is the result.
Why 'Duality'? The Oxford American Dictionary defines duality as "an instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or two aspects of something" The word describes my approach to photography because while I make my living employing the most modern digital technique, I have deep respect for the original film and chemistry techniques. I own and occasionally use about a dozen film-type cameras dating from the 1920's to the 1970's. I love the authentic vintage picture quality that you get from using authentic vintage equipment. I have volumes of books on the most influential photographers of the past for whom I have deep respect. I still have the Minolta my sister gave me and every once in a while, I'll take it out of the case and shoot a roll of film with it. Then I'll go back to my Canon 5D Mark II and enjoy the benefits of modern technology and the picture quailty that demanding art directors expect. In that sense, I guess I am of two minds.
